After several years of dating and living together near Parma, Italy, we got married in 2014 and decided to move to the United States in 2015. Eventually, we settled in the small city of Wilmington, North Carolina- a beautiful town wedged between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Over the years, we searched high and low for the food and wine we missed from northern Italy-especially Lambrusco wine- but we couldn't find anything in the Southeast that matched the quality we were used to.
It was during the quarantine days of COVID that we wondered, instead of waiting for someone else to import the products we loved, if maybe we should just do it. It was then that the idea of American Fulfillment Online was born.
The idea is simple: rebuild the personal connections on both sides of the ocean that first brought great European food to the United States. The old importing businesses, run by people from the countries they import from, are closing shop. As that generation retires, corporations are trying to take their place- but without the passion, the culture, and the personal connections that real Europeans have.
In many ways, we are carrying on a tradition that is centuries old.
The only difference? We use the modern tools of eCommerce to ensure you don't have to live in a big city to enjoy high-quality European products.
We can't wait to introduce you to the food and wine we love and enjoy ourselves.
-Virgil and Lindsey
Virgil speaks Italian, German, Romanian, French and English fluently. Lindsey speaks English and Italian. Our knowledge of language is critical in giving us access to hyper local products that large corporates just cannot find.
Italy, where we mostly import from at the moment, just isn't that big. Everybody knows everybody. Virgil is from Parma- the agricultural heart of the country and a city that centers traditional cuisine at the heart of everything. We started with Parmigiano Reggiano because that is what we know best. From there, we have been able to meet producers of the highest-quality products in Italy.
Mostly by boat, so we can keep prices low, but sometimes by plane too. We handle all of the logistics and certifications from the product pick-up at the producer's headquarters, to the port in Tuscany, to the port on the East Coast, all the way to our headquarters in Wilmington, NC. We do not rely on any middle men, except for the company that owns the boats and planes!
Why not? It's a port city, plus, we live here! Wilmington is at the heart of a rapidly growing part of the country that, traditionally, has gotten the short stick when it comes to quality European foods. We are proud to be based in the Southeast, even as we ship from Puerto Rico to Alaska!
